VarietyLocal Landrace

Worka Cooperative operates Halo Fafate washing station in Yirgacheffe. Local smallholder farmers grow coffee to supplement their income and for personal use. These farmers grow both local landrace varieties as well as hybrid’s developed by JARC (Jimma Agricultural Research Centre).

The soils of Yirgacheffe, along with other growing regions in the Southern and Western parts of Ethiopia are of volcanic origin, with a high mineral holding capacity - known as ‘Clay-loam’ soils. Dark brown in colour, the topsoil here goes down at least 1.5 metres and Arabica Coffee tree’s thrive in the region's pH levels.

Rarely do we feature two coffee’s from the same region at the same time. Worka Coop is a short drive from Halo Beriti in Gedeb, interestingly though, these two coffees have distinguishing flavour profiles. This lot is aromatic like bergamot and tastes of sweet prune.
